Rummy Rules to Play Online Rummy

Rummy is a popular card game which is played between two to six players with two decks of cards including Joker cards. To win a rummy game, it is required to make a valid declaration by a player through picking & discarding cards from the two piles. One pile is closed where the players aren’t allowed to see the cards while the other pile is an open pile, made by the cards discarded by the players.

  • A player who has scored zero or fewer rummy points wins the game.

  • The ultimate objective of the game is to make proper sets & sequences out of the assigned 13 cards by the player.
  • To make a valid declaration, a player must make two sequences out of which one must be a pure sequence. The second sequence can be pure or impure.

What are Sequences?

A sequence can be formed by grouping two or more cards consecutively from the same suit. It has two types:

Pure Sequence

As mentioned above, a pure sequence is vital to winning the game. A player can make a pure sequence using two or more consecutive cards from the same suit without using any joker card.

For example:

  • A♣️ 2♣️ 3♣️ 4♣️ - It is a pure sequence with the use of four cards of clubs grouped in consecutive order.
  • 5♥️ 6♥️ 7♥️ - A pure sequence consisting of three consecutive cards of Hearts.

Impure Sequence

On the contrary, an impure sequence is one which consists of two or more consecutive cards of the same suit along with a joker card.

For example:

  • A♣️ 2♣️ 3♣️ 4♣️ - It is a pure sequence with the use of four cards of clubs grouped in consecutive order.
  • 5♥️ 6♥️ 7♥️ - A pure sequence consisting of three consecutive cards of Hearts.

What are Sets?

Unlike sequences, a set is made using two or more cards with the same value but from different suits. In other words, the players aren’t allowed to use two cards from the same suit.

Sets without Jokers

  • 2♥️ 2♠️ 2♣️ 2♦️ - A valid set made using four 2s of different suits without using any joker card
  • A♥️ A♣️ A♦️ - A valid set consisting of three As of different suits without joker cards

Sets with Jokers

  • 4♦️ 4♣️ 4♠️ PJ - It is an invalid set as made using a Printed joker to replace 4 of Hearts
  • 7♠️ 7♣️ K♥️ - An invalid set having K♥️ as a Wild joker card.
